A pressed-glass cake stand ten inches across, standing on its own fluted pedestal — plate and foot are one piece of glass, pressed together rather than joined.

The pattern works outward in bands: a scalloped edge, then a garland of paired laurel leaves running along a wandering stem, then a narrow course of fine dashes, and finally long rays radiating in to a plain centre. What makes this one is the ground behind all of it. The whole field is finely stippled, so it reads like sanded frost and catches the light in thousands of tiny points, while the leaves and the scalloped edge stay smooth and polished above it.

The colour is a warm blush — rose across the plate, turning gold where the light comes through the thick cone of the pedestal. Look down into the glass at the centre and there is a scatter of seed bubbles held deep in the thickest part.

Two honest notes, because they are the questions a careful buyer asks. There is no mark anywhere on the piece, so I am not putting a maker on it. Sellers call this leaf border “Laurel Leaf” and I use the name the same way they do — as a description of the border, not as a factory pattern name — because the attributions in the market split between two different glasshouses and nothing on this example settles it. And I am not putting a decade on it either; nothing in the glass dates it.

What it is, without any of that: a generous, pretty, properly made blush glass cake stand that holds a ten-inch cake dead level and earns its place on a table whether or not there is cake on it.
