Vintage Cut Floral Champagne Coupes — Set of 4, Pinched Waist Bowl, Mid-Century

Four champagne coupes with a shape you do not see often. The bowl flares wide at the rim, nips sharply in at a waist a third of the way down, then swells out again and tapers into the stem — two curves with a hard little pinch between them, where almost every other coupe is a single shallow dish.

Around the flare runs a wheel-cut band: five-petal flowers with the petals filled in fine parallel lines, pointed leaves, and a thin stem running between them. Cut on a wheel rather than acid-etched, which is why the lines have depth and catch the light instead of sitting flat on the surface.

A long drawn stem on a plain polished foot. Five and a half inches tall and light in the hand, so they read tall and delicate rather than heavy. Four is the number that does a dinner party — and a coupe does a daiquiri or a sidecar as happily as champagne.

Unmarked, like most stemware of this kind — the maker’s name lived on a foil label that came off in the first wash. No maker is claimed. The circa comes from the form and the style of the cutting, not from a mark.
