Three crystal wine goblets cut with a cornflower — a fan of long pointed petals springing from a cross-hatched calyx, a hatched bud beside it, and a broad serrated leaf below, all carried on a thin arcing stem that wraps the bowl. The bowl is a flared tulip over vertical optic panels, on a knopped stem and a plain polished foot.

The cutting is done on a wheel and left unpolished — "gray cut" — so the petals have a soft frosted surface with real depth to them, not the flat grey of a sandblasted or printed design. Run a fingertip over it and you can feel every line. The optic panels throw light the way pressed glass never does. Tap one and it rings, and holds the note.

Look into the stems and you will find seed bubbles caught in the glass — trapped air from the blowing, and a thing machine-pressed stemware simply does not have.

A note on the pattern, because it is the interesting part: the cornflower is most famously associated with W.J. Hughes of Toronto, who cut it from 1912 onward. But genuine Hughes is unmarked too — the firm used paper labels — and the motif was cut by many decorating shops on bought-in blanks. So the pattern is named here and the maker is not. No maker is claimed.
