A large Sascha Brastoff Surf Ballet chop platter in the black marbled glaze, 18 inches across.
Brastoff ran one of the most ambitious ceramics studios in post-war Los Angeles, backed by Winthrop Rockefeller, and Surf Ballet was his signature effect — the marbling was made by floating glaze on water and drawing the piece through it, so no two are identical. Deep black breaks into liquid grey and white across a freeform wavy rim. This is the large platter, the biggest size the pattern was made in.
It works either way. Set it on a table and it is a serving platter with real presence. Put it on a plate hanger and it is abstract wall art — at 18 inches it is big enough to anchor a gallery wall on its own, or to be the one piece that pulls a black-and-white arrangement together.
The underside carries the full gold signature backstamp with the stylised rooster.
