A small hand-blown handkerchief vessel — the form Italian glassmakers call a fazzoletto, where the rim is pulled and draped while the glass is still molten so it falls like a dropped square of cloth. No two finish the same way.
The colour runs in bands around the body: cherry red, warm orange and soft coral, cut through with thin black lines that follow the curve of the rim. The outside is cased over an opaque white interior, which is what makes the reds read so strongly rather than going dark — light comes through the wall and stops at the white.
It is genuinely hand-blown, and the base says so. There is a rough pontil scar at the centre where the piece was snapped off the punty, left as it broke rather than ground flat, and small round bubbles are suspended throughout the glass. Both are the honest fingerprints of a piece worked by hand at the furnace.
Pick it up and the weight is the surprise. Just over a pound in something under six inches across — the walls are thick and the glass is dense, which is why the colour has such depth in it.
Small enough to live somewhere you'll actually see it. Rings and earrings on a dresser, keys by the front door, paperclips on a desk, or a few short-stemmed blooms with the heads resting on the rim.
